MOHALI, INDIA - Vice-captain Ajay Jadeja hit 73 runs to take India to a comfortable five-wicket victory over underdogs Bangladesh in the opening match of a triangular cricket series on Thursday. Adjusting himself well to a slow wicket with uneven bounce, Jadeja hit eight boundaries and made victory look easy in the end. He tided over initial setbacks India suffered after losing opener Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid cheaply.
India reached the target with 28 deliveries to spare. Kenya will play Bangladesh in the second match of the tournament at Hyderabad, capital of southern Andhra Pradesh state. Bangladesh, babes of international cricket, acquitted itself well with its bowlers maintaining tight line and length throughout. Fancied India was made to struggle for runs until Jadeja took command of the situation. He was ably assisted by Robin Singh who remained 27 not out.
Skipper Mohammed Azharuddin scored a brisk 31 runs. Earlier, a solid 70 by Aminul Islam helped Bangladesh score 184 for nine in 50 overs after Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat first. Fresh from their recent impressive victory over Australia in a triangular series at Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, Indians restricted Bangladesh to below 200 runs.
Though new to international cricket, Bangladesh has qualified to play in the World Cup next year in Britain. Islam, a stand-in captain in place of injured Akram Khan, stemmed a collapse with his patient knock. Khaled Mehmud also played well for his 31 runs. India Young fast medium bowler Ajit Agarkaer claimed three wickets for 41 runs. India decided to rest star batsman Sachin Tendulkar and leg-spinner Anil Kumble for the first two matches.
